The Beacon Scholarship

The Beacon Scholarship offers access for financially disadvantaged students from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to undergraduate programmes of study at world class schools and universities.

Who should apply?

Applicants must be nominated by their current School Head. Once they receive an offer of admission from one of the Beacon Partner Universities, they will be invited to apply for a Beacon Scholarship. Evaluations are made by the Beacon Equity Trust and will be based on:

  • Academic ability.
  • Able to demonstrate financial need.
  • Leadership potential.
  • Financial need.
  • Being a ‘change-maker’.

What is it?

  • The scholarship is jointly funded by The Beacon Equity Trust and The University of Bristol. It covers two-thirds of the combined cost of tuition fees, living costs and one return economy airfare. (Living costs for 2018 will be approximately £10,500).
  • The University pays one-third of the cost and Beacon pays one-third of the cost.
  • The remaining third of the cost of the tuition fees, living costs and return airfare will need to be funded by the student's parent, guardian or sponsor.

Terms and conditions

Candidates must hold an offer from the University of Bristol in order to qualify. Please refer to the Beacon Scholarship website for full details of the eligibility criteria.

When is the deadline?

There are two deadlines during the year:

  • The deadline for applications for the 19/20 academic year has now closed.
  • Applications for the 2020/21 academic year will open on 1st August 2019.

The Beacon Scholarship has been providing exceptional students from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda with funding and support to study at world class universities since 2009.
