Engineering biology

Engineering biology represents a shift towards a more design‑led, predictive approach to biology, in which living systems can be reprogrammed or constructed for defined purposes.

In Bristol, this builds on strong foundations in molecular bioscience to enable the development of synthetic systems, engineered microorganisms and bespoke biomolecules.

Our goal is to move beyond descriptive biology and towards the rational design of biological function, with applications spanning therapeutics, diagnostics, sustainable manufacturing and biomaterials.

Our work is inherently interdisciplinary, combining experimental and computational approaches, and aligns closely with broader institutional ambitions to develop new technologies with clear societal and economic impact.
