Infectious diseases and anti-microbial resistance

Research in infectious diseases is driven by the need to understand, at a fundamental level, how pathogens emerge and evolve, and how they interact with and transmit between hosts.

In Bristol, this encompasses a broad spectrum of viral and bacterial pathogens and approaches, including studies of pathogen biology, host responses and One Health transmission dynamics and molecular epidemiology.

A particular focus is antimicrobial resistance, where there is an urgent requirement for new strategies that move beyond traditional drug discovery.

By combining mechanistic insight with translational ambition, and by working closely with clinical and public health partners, this theme aims to contribute to the development of novel interventions, vaccines and diagnostics, and to inform strategies for disease prevention and control .
