This programme, accredited by both the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing (IDM), has been designed for graduates who aspire to a career or advanced study in marketing. It will prepare you to respond to the challenges posed by today's global business environment, both on and off line. There are three different degree awards available, giving you the option to focus on strategy and business development or digital, or to pursue a more general degree programme.
You will have the opportunity to gain professional marketing qualifications through the CIM Graduate Gateway programme. Students graduating from the MSc Marketing will receive exemptions for two of the three modules required for the Level 4 Certificate in Professional Marketing and one exemption for the Level 6 Diploma in Professional Marketing.
IDM also offers the opportunity for a professional qualification, leading to the honorific Certificate in DDM that recognises employable digital skills alongside the MSc Marketing degree. Once registered for the relevant exam, additional benefits include an IDM membership that provides access to IDM and Direct Marketing Association events that are useful for networking, IDM content and communications.
Since this MSc Marketing programme enables students to obtain these CIM and IDM qualifications, which are highly sought after by employers, graduates will be ready for a successful career in marketing.
This is a specialist programme so some academic experience in marketing is required through a prior degree that contains some exposure to business, marketing or management. We are also seeking students who have a curious and creative mind and possess a genuine interest in the subject.
You will be part of a dynamic and diverse body of staff and students, and will be taught by experienced academics. Many staff within our School of Economics, Finance and Management are actively engaged in conducting pioneering research at international level, and our school was ranked sixth in the UK for its research impact (Times Higher Education analysis of REF 2014), reflecting the quality of our research and its role in shaping policy and practice in the UK, Europe and globally.
Fees for 2020/21
We charge an annual tuition fee. Fees for 2020/21 are as follows:
- UK/EU: full-time
- Overseas: full-time
- Channel Islands/Isle of Man: full-time

Successful completion of four core units, two optional units and a final project (dissertation or applied extended project) lead to an MSc Marketing award. The core units provide an essential platform of knowledge and the key underpinning skills needed to succeed in a marketing career or advanced study. As a final piece of work, you may choose between tackling an issue that is primarily theoretical in nature or respond to a real organisational issue/challenge from the practitioner environment.
These units will equip you with the skills to critically analyse the challenges facing the current global marketing industry. You will also learn how to formulate an appropriate and innovative strategic response in light of the latest digital developments in the field.
There are three available degree awards, which aim to match your skills and personal interests with contemporary career trends and market demand:
- MSc Marketing (Digital)
- MSc Marketing (Strategy and Business Development)
- MSc Marketing
The degree you are awarded will be determined by the combination of optional units* you choose to study.

Applicants are required to hold/achieve an upper second-class degree in a business, management or marketing-related discipline, or an equivalent international qualification from a reputable university.

The principles underpinning these programmes mean that they are both academically rigorous and practically applied. Successful graduates are provided with a strong foundation for a range of careers - not just in marketing, but for any role that requires an analytical way of thinking and a creative approach to problem solving. Graduates of this programme are likely to opt for careers as marketing specialists in multi-national corporations or small-medium enterprises or create their own marketing firms. It also prepares graduates for study at a higher level.
