What makes this programme unique?

  • Integrates conceptual urban thinking with advanced data science and analytical methods.
  • Bridges the gap between technical, data science programmes and urban studies degrees.
  • A strong focus on cities and urban systems as a coherent and structured learning pathway.
  • Close connections to cutting-edge research and interdisciplinary urban science initiatives such as the Planetary Urban Sciences Lab (+Lab).

What you will gain from this programme:

  • An ability to analyse and interpret complex urban systems using data, models and theory.
  • Skills in data science, machine learning and AI as well as spatial analysis and GIS.
  • A capacity to design and evaluate solutions to urban challenges in policy and practice contexts.
  • Enhanced critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills.

Relevance in the real world:

  • Students will learn skills applicable to careers in urban planning, transport, infrastructure, sustainability and data analytics.
  • Graduates will be able to combine technical and analytical expertise with critical judgement, skills that are valued by employers.
  • The programme supports roles in government, consultancy, NGOs and technology-driven urban sectors.
  • This programme will prepare students for further research or doctoral study in urban, environmental or geospatial sciences.

Programme structure

This MSc in Urban Science combines conceptual, analytical and applied learning to develop a comprehensive understanding of urban systems. Core units in Teaching Block 1 provide foundations in urban theory and urban analytics, ensuring you develop both critical and computational skills in parallel.

In Teaching Block 2, you deepen this knowledge through advanced, applied learning, including sustainability, risk and consultancy-based work on real-world urban challenges. Optional units allow you to tailor the programme to your interests, including topics such as data science, GIS, machine learning and climate risk.

A key component of the programme is the dissertation. This allows you to design and complete an independent research project, bringing together theory, data analysis and applied problem-solving to address a substantive urban challenge.

Entry requirements

You will typically need an upper second-class honours degree or an international equivalent in any social science, science, mathematics, or professional degree (medicine, architecture, planning or engineering).

All other degree subjects will be considered on a case-by-case basis if you can demonstrate academic experience in data science, GIS, coding, modelling, or statistics.

Alternatively, six months paid work experience/internship in a quantitative, data science or analysis, or GIS role in government, NGO or industry may be considered to demonstrate sufficient academic experience; these will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

If you are currently completing a degree, we understand that your final grade may be higher than the interim grades you have achieved during your studies to date. We will consider your application if your interim grades are currently slightly lower than the programme's entry requirements and may make you an aspirational offer. This offer would be at the standard level, so you would need to achieve the standard entry requirements by the end of your degree.

We will also consider your application if your final overall achieved grade is slightly lower than the programme's entry requirement.

If your achieved grade is lower than our entry requirements, your application may be more likely to receive an offer if you have additional relevant work experience or qualifications. If you have one of the following, please include your CV (curriculum vitae/résumé) when you apply, showing:

  • evidence of at least six months paid work experience/internship in a quantitative, data science or analysis, or GIS role in government, NGO or industry
  • a relevant postgraduate qualification.

Online/self-directed certificates in coding, programming, data science or analytics can be used to meet the requirements; these will be considered on a case by case basis.

See international equivalent qualifications on the International Office website.
