Our programme is designed to enrich understanding of employment, work and equality law, investigating the various legal disciplines that regulate work relations. This is an opportunity to examine wide-ranging questions concerning the impact of law, regulation, policy and practice. You will study core theoretical debates and relevant aspects of legal methods, engaging with a variety of institutions, practices, behaviours and ideas. The programme is taught by a world-leading group of labour lawyers with diverse methodological interests who are associated with the Bristol Centre for Law at Work.
Fees for 2020/21
We charge an annual tuition fee. Fees for 2020/21 are as follows:
- UK/EU: full-time
- UK/EU: part-time (two years)
- Overseas: full-time
- Channel Islands/Isle of Man: full-time

The programme consists of two parts. In the first part, there are two core compulsory units: Individual Employment Rights and Collective Labour Law. These will provide essential grounding in foundational legal issues affecting the field of work. You will be investigating not only UK legal material but also international and regional legal standards and human rights norms. You will explore diverse transnational activities and forms of market regulation.
You also select two further units from range of specialist labour law and other options. These may include: International Law of Labour and Social Rights, Migration and Work and Philosophical Foundations of Labour and Employment Law. Alternatively, there may be other options you find of interest, such as human rights law, company law or international law.
In the second part of the programme you will write a dissertation of 12,000 words on a subject of your choice under the supervision of our staff. This means that you will have assistance in crafting your research and writing by a leading labour lawyer who is actively researching in the field.

An upper second-class honours degree in law (or international equivalent).
Exceptionally, we will also consider applicants who have:
- an upper second-class honours degree that included content relevant to the applicant's proposed field of study; or
- an upper second-class honours degree in any subject, along with relevant experience in a discipline closely related to the focus of this programme.
Applicants in either of these two exceptional cases must make a case explaining why their qualifications or experience fall into category (1) or (2) in their personal statement.
Recognised Prior Learning is currently not accepted. Previous or professional experience is not required.

A specialist qualification in labour law can offer opportunities to work with the best solicitors’ firms in the country, to practise in leading employment sets as a barrister in chambers, but also to pursue careers in management, the civil service, policy-making through trade unions, employers’ organisations and NGOs and even international and European organisations.
