Materials Only short courses [University of Bristol only]
'Materials only' (MO) short courses offer access to course materials and session recordings from our live short courses. These are ideal for those who cannot take full advantage of a live taught course, or who simply wish to refresh their knowledge in a specific area of study.
Access to 'materials only’ courses is reserved for University of Bristol staff and research students only.
An introduction to 'Materials Only' short courses
After a successful pilot in 2021-2022, we are pleased to confirm that our 'Materials Only' (MO) offering will continue to be available to internal University of Bristol staff and research students. We hope this will help ease the demand on live courses and make training materials more widely available.
How does it work?
Access is granted to the course materials via BlackBoard, approximately 1 month after the live online course has completed. This short delay gives us time to process all live lecture recordings and ensure that the course materials are complete. For courses that run twice, the MO version will be available approximately 1 month after the first run.
We provide access to materials for an extended period, at least 3 months but normally 6+ months, to allow the greatest benefit from the course. We rescind access 8 weeks in advance of the course running again in the next academic year, but provide warning via email when there is only 1 month remaining.
Bookings
MO courses can be booked through our online booking system. They appear as separate courses in the booking system, but are only visible to those correctly registered as University of Bristol staff or students. Please take due care to select the correct option when booking.
Availability & cost
We offer MO courses free of charge and they will not use up any discounts from voucher pack allocations. You can sign up to as many MO courses as you please and there is no competition for places.
Please note that with MO courses there are no interactive sessions nor any support from course tutors. We recommend that you sign up to the full online version of a course if you wish to take part in practicals and interactive sessions.

Will booking an MO course use up my voucher allocation?
MO courses are offered free of charge to University of Bristol staff and research students. You will not need to use up any allowance from your voucher packs to gain access.
How do I book an MO course?
MO courses can be booked by University of Bristol staff and research students via our online booking system.
MO courses appear as separate courses in the booking system and the course title is prefixed with "MATERIALS ONLY". Please take care to ensure you select the correct version of the course. You can filter on 'materials only' using the filter on the left hand side of the screen.
Bookings for MO courses close 1 month after the live online course has completed. Thereafter please contact short-course@bristol.ac.uk to request access.
Are there limited places?
You can sign up to as many MO courses as you please. Places are not restricted, and there is no competition for places.
When will I gain access and for how long will I be able to use the materials?
Access is granted to the course materials via BlackBoard, approximately 1 month after the live online course has completed. This short delay gives us time to process all live lecture recordings and ensure that the course materials are complete.
We grant access to materials for as long as we are able, normally until 8 weeks in advance of the course running again in the next academic year. This enables access for at least 3 months, and in most cases for up to 10 months.
We will email you when there is only 1 month of access remaining.
I’m on the waiting list for the full online course, should I sign up to the MO course?
If your preference is to attend the complete live online course and fully benefit from interactive sessions, practicals and tutor contact, then we recommend you retain a place on the waiting list in case a space becomes available.
Once the course has run, if you have been unsuccessful in securing a place we will prompt you to register for the MO course.
If I’m attending the full online course, do I also need to sign up for the MO course?
Those who do attend the live online course also retain access to the course materials after completion, so it is not necessary to sign up to both versions of the course.
Why can't find the MO course I want to book in the booking system?
Bookings for MO courses close 1 month after the live online course has completed. If this time has already passed for a course you are interested in, then it will no longer be listed as bookable in our system. We are still happy to provide access, please just contact us at short-course@bristol.ac.uk and we will make the necessary arrangements.
