Research

Our Medical School conducts research spanning molecules to populations, delivering insights that improve health at every scale. We are internationally recognised for world-leading, data‑intensive population health sciences that harness cutting-edge analytics to address complex health challenges.

Major research investments

Our work is underpinned by major infrastructure investments, including the MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit (IEU), NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), Applied Research Collaboration (ARC), School for Public Health Research (SPHR), School for Primary Care Research (SPCR), and Health Protection Research Units (HPRU).

We are home to the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) and are a national hub for longitudinal population studies, through our co-leadership of Population Research UK and the Longitudinal Linkage Collaboration

Our approach

We take a collaborative, Team Science approach, combining methodological rigour with interdisciplinary expertise to address the most pressing health challenges. Through this integrated approach, we deliver data-driven interdisciplinary research that benefits individuals, populations, and health systems, translating discovery into real world benefit.

Our research aligns closely with the Faculty’s six Grand Challenges, advancing understanding and prevention across areas such as planetary health, infectious disease, mental health, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and engineering biology.

We contribute not only subject expertise but also leadership in cross-cutting themes including health inequalities, community engagement, and policy impact.
