Terms of reference

The terms of reference of the Military Education Committee are as follows:-

1. To advise the three universities represented on the MEC (Bristol, Bath and U.W.E.) on matters of military education and to promote defence studies in the universities.
2. To liaise as necessary with other institutions of higher education whose students are members of the Service Units (Bristol University Royal Naval Unit, Bristol University Officers Training Corps and Bristol University Air Squadron); to invite representatives of such institutions to attend meetings of the Committee as non-voting members when appropriate or necessary.
3. To have oversight of the Service Units, representing the interests of the Universities and their students to the staff of the Units, and the interests of the Service Units to the University authorities and the general University communities.
4. To receive and comment on proposals and to approve the appointment of the Honorary Colonel of Bristol University Officers Training Corps
5. To liaise with the office of the Military Secretary, contributing to the formulation of the job specification for Commanding Officers of Bristol University Officers Training Corps.
6. To liaise with The Council of Military Education Committees of the Universities of the United Kingdom (COMEC) referring matters affecting the Service Units and military education to COMEC as appropriate and acting as the channel of communication for COMEC with the Universities.
7. To liaise as necessary with the operational chain of command of the Service Units (as set out in Schedule 1 of these TOR) on matters affecting the Service Units.
8. To liaise if necessary with the higher command of the Service Units (as set out in Schedule 2 of these TOR) on matters affecting the Service Units.
