About the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law
The Faculty of Social Sciences and Law is internationally recognised for delivering high-quality education. For those who want to pursue a career in research – or develop the skills employers from a range of sectors are looking for – our specialist taught programmes provide a strong grounding in research methodologies and critical thinking. Our vocational programmes and related activities provide continuous professional development in education, management, law and social work.
Our South West Doctoral Training Partnership, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, offers high-quality training and supervision. These MRes and PhD programmes build doctoral students’ intellectual capacity and research skills and prepare them for careers in the global economy.
The excellence of Bristol’s social science research was confirmed by the latest Research Excellence Framework. Seven of Bristol’s nine social sciences submissions were ranked in the top ten and two were ranked first (Times Higher Education analysis of REF 2014).
The faculty attracts a wide range of funding from research councils, charities and government departments around the world. Supported by funders such as UK Research and Innovation, the European Research Council, the National Institute for Health Research, the Leverhulme Trust and the Department for International Development, our researchers are working at the heart of issues that surround social concerns, advancing social innovation and delivering evidence for policymakers.
Our research is published in internationally renowned journals and by prestigious academic publishers across social sciences and law. The faculty also hosts and edits a number of highly regarded social science journals, including Policy and Politics, Ethnicities, Antipode: A Radical Journal of Geography, Journal of Common Market Studies, British Accounting Review, Contemporary Political Theory and the Common Law World Review.
The Faculty of Social Sciences and Law offers excellent support for research and research-related activities, and actively cultivates an inter-school, interdisciplinary ethos. There are a number of research centres within the schools alongside faculty research groups, many of which are cross faculty and transdisciplinary. This creates a vibrant, supportive and inter-disciplinary environment in the faculty, helping postgraduate students enhance their learning and research experience.
