This MSc provides skills and knowledge to support your career in the field of water and environmental management. The content of the programme has been designed to help you develop a detailed knowledge of fundamental environmental processes, as well as policy, regulation and other tools.
A key focus is on how you can contribute to sustainable management of water resources and other aspects of environmental management. Teaching covers both academic and practical skills. Teaching staff include leading water and environment researchers at the University of Bristol as well as practitioners with experience in private and government sectors, both in the UK and overseas.

Core units provide a common platform of underpinning skills and knowledge at a postgraduate level to help you understand the basic principles of water and environmental management and the complexity and interdisciplinary skills required to work in this field. These units include mathematics and computing skills to support modelling and statistical analysis, along with the fundamental processes that govern water movement through the atmosphere, atmosphere-biosphere interactions and surface and groundwater water flows through catchments.
Core units also explore how this knowledge is used to develop and implement environmental policies, regulations and plans, and to manage water and environmental values. You will also choose from a selection of optional units, which in recent years have covered integrated catchment management, environmental systems and ecosystem services and water and wastewater management. Finally, you will complete a supervised research-based dissertation.

An upper second-class honours degree (or international equivalent) in engineering or science. Other disciplines will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The programme is aimed at those planning to become a high-level practitioner in either the private or public sector and allows graduates to pursue both technical and policy/management career paths. Graduates of the course now work for consultancies and professional service firms, water companies and government agencies, with some choosing to further their research interests via doctoral research.
