Building Up to Bristol for Bristol Scholars
To help Bristol Scholars make a smooth transition to university, we offer a bespoke Building Up to Bristol course. This four-day in-person course will offer you the best possible preparation for your degree.
Course content
This course will prepare you for working at an undergraduate level. It will develop your ability to:
- read critically
- plan your writing
- construct an argument
- tailor your work to a particular audience.
You will also build resilience, motivation and community, all of which are essential for thriving at university.
The course is not assessed or accredited.
Location, timetable and workload
This in-person course will take place from Tuesday 3 to Friday 6 September 2024 on our Clifton Campus. Classes will run from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm every day, with a one-hour break for lunch.
You will not be expected to do any work outside of class.
Class size and teaching staff
You will be taught in groups of up to twenty students by staff from the Centre of Academic Language and Development. The centre specialises in helping students to develop their communication in academic contexts.
Cost and financial support
This course is free for Bristol Scholars to attend. You will receive £100 to thank you for your time and cover your expenses. You will need to attend the whole course to receive the whole £100.
Lunch and any materials you need for the course will be provided.
Entry requirements
Only students who are already part of our Bristol Scholars scheme are eligible for this course. All Bristol Scholars will be expected to attend.
If you are a mature student who is not a Bristol Scholar, you may be interested in our mature students provision. If you are an international student wanting to prepare for university, you may wish to consider our pre-sessional courses.
Confirmation deadline
If you are a Bristol Scholar, we will email you an enrolment form. We will ask you to confirm availability and any access requirements by 6 pm on Tuesday 25 June 2024.
