Self help - questions and answers
Here are some regularly-asked questions that we hope you will find useful as you prepare for your study at the University of Bristol.
CAS/visa questions
We do not send out offer letters – you can access your offer letter through your online application form and we find a printed copy of this is sufficient for most student's needs. If you are an international student, your CAS number is confirmation that you have an unconditional offer.
Once you have met all conditions of your offer, paid your deposit (if not sponsored) and provided a colour copy of your passport, a CAS number will be released automatically. For MSc students we usually release CAS numbers from the end of May each year. However, a CAS can only be used from 3 months before your programme start date. If you have further queries about your visa or CAS number, please visit our Student Visa advice website.
If you have any visa questions we have experts on hand to help you in our International Office. You can email them on student-visa-advice@bristol.ac.uk. You can also find more information on the International Office website.
If you have any visa questions, then we have experts on hand to help. Please contact our Student Visa Advice team. You can find detailed information regarding the visa application process on our Student Visa Services website.
Fees and finance
If you are self-funded international student applying for a taught programme, you will be required to pay a deposit within 4 weeks of receiving your offer letter. You will be required to pay a minimum of £1,500 but may pay up to the full cost of the tuition fee if desired. The deadline for payment of the deposit will be indicated on your offer letter. The payment of a deposit (or confirmation of sponsorship agreement for students who are not self-funding) is required before we can provide a CAS to support your visa application.
International deposit payments are non-refundable, except under the exceptional circumstances outlined in the International deposit refund policy. To apply for a refund, you should contact wd-app@bristol.ac.uk.
The tuition fee itself covers charges for tuition, examination, registration and a contribution towards the cost of membership of the University Union. You can find out more about fees, how to pay them and when on the University of Bristol Fees and Funding web pages.
If your tuition fees and living costs are being partially or completely covered by a third party, we will require confirmation of this from your sponsor. This can either be a formal letter confirming the level of sponsorship you will be receiving, or you can use the . Once completed this form can be emailed to us on efim-pgadmissions@bristol.ac.uk. Remember to use your Application ID and Student Number in all correspondence relating to your application. Students whose fees are being paid by an external organisation or sponsor (for example, a government department, company or charity) are not required to pay a deposit. The organisation paying your fees will be invoiced and requested to pay the full fee once you have registered on the programme of study.
Advice about funding your time at the University of Bristol is available on our Fees and Funding website. A comprehensive catelogue of funding opportunities is also available when using our Funding Search Tool.
My programme
The Graduate Studies Office will be happy to consider change of programme requests. These should be submitted by email and confirm the reason why you are making the request.
Meeting the conditions of your offer
If you have an outstanding condition in your offer letter, we expect to receive evidence of this being met at the earliest possible opportunity, but no later than 14 July 2019. Documents should be uploaded to the ‘evidence for conditions’ section of your online application once available. If you anticipate a delay in providing evidence you should notify us in advance, by emailing efim-pgadmissions@bristol.ac.uk and provide detail about when your evidence will be available. An extension request may then be considered.
If you are planning to study on one of the University of Bristol's Pre-sessional Academic English Courses, then please do not worry. We will await the results of the Pre-Sessional course as a means of meeting your language condition. However, you should still provide evidence for all other conditions associated with your offer by 14 July 2019.
We do not require any document to be posted or emailed to us. Please upload the relevant documents required to meet your conditions as soon as possible in the "Evidence for Conditions" section of your online application form. This will then be passed to the Admissions Tutor for consideration and we will inform you whether your conditions have been successfully met via email to your registered email contact.
You can only receive an unconditional offer once you have met the conditions of your offer. You will need to provide evidence that you have met your conditions before your offer can be made unconditional.
Pre-sessional language course students
If you have an conditional offer and are attending the pre-sessional programme to meet your language condition, the University of Bristol Centre for English Language and Foundation Studies will release a CAS number for you for the duration of your pre-sessional programme.
If you successfully pass the programme and meet your language condition (along with any other conditions of offer you may have), and have paid your programme deposit and provided us with a colour copy of your passport, we will automatically release a CAS number for the period of your MSc programme.
If you have a language condition on your MSc offer and you do not achieve the required standard at the pre-sessional Language Programme, you will not have met the language condition of your offer and unfortunately, we will not be able to register you for any of our MSc programmes.
