- Access to Bristol
The Access to Bristol scheme is an initiative that provides local students with an opportunity to experience life at the University of Bristol, gaining access to its academic expertise and facilities. The scheme is designed as a curriculum enrichment opportunity for students studying A-levels or equivalents and is open to all students in the first or second year of A-level study.
- Accompaniment, dissertation, composition and performance prizes
The Music Department may award prizes for the best final year dissertation, the best final year recital, the best composition portfolio and the best work in accompaniment each year on the basis of the examiners' recommendations.
- Activia Training UK Scholarship
Activia Training offer a £1,000 annual scholarship for UK college, or undergraduate and postgraduate university students in the UK. There is no specific course of study required, and students can use the money in whatever way that they feel benefits their studies the most. - Please note that that the University of Bristol is not in any way responsible for the award and students should deal with Activia Training directly.
- Aga Khan Foundation
The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from select developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies, in order to prepare them for employment, primarily within the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).

- Alumni Foundation music bursaries
These bursaries are available to non-Music Department musicians to help with the cost of instrumental or singing lessons. One of the criteria for being awarded a bursary is contribution to University music-making so they can only be held from the second year onwards
- Alumni discounts
University of Bristol alumni who go on to study for a postgraduate degree – either taught or research – at Bristol can benefit from a 10 per cent reduction in tuition fees.
The 10 per cent discount is available for students who start their postgraduate degree on or after 1 October 2017 and will be applied to their tuition fees for the full duration of the programme. Read more about eligibility.
- Amelia Earhart Fellowship Programme
Established in 1938 in honour of famed pilot and Zontian, Amelia Earhart, the Amelia Earhart Fellowship is awarded annually to women pursuing Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace-related sciences or aerospace-related engineering.
- American Alumni Scholarships
This scholarship was established from a fundraising initiative of Convocation with the American alumni. It is awarded on the grounds of academic excellence, financial need and ambassadorial potential. The scholarship will be held in conjunction with one year taught postgraduate programme in any field of study.

This Scholarship is for Danish or British Graduates who should either have embarked on a postgraduate course / research leading to a higher degree, or be assured of being able to do so in the relevant academic year.

- Audio Engineering Society
The Audio Engineering Society Educational Foundation is dedicated to encouraging the entry of talented students into the profession of audio engineering. - Becas Chile (Conicyt)
The National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (Conicyt) currently offers full scholarships to cover tuition fees, living expenses, airfare and English language courses to Chilean postgraduate students.
- Becas Magdalena O. Vda. de Brockmann
Scholarships are awarded to Mexicans who want to undertake a Masters of quality in a recognized university abroad. The scholarships are partial or complementary and cover only the first year of study. These are awarded based on need and merit, to Mexican citizens, preferably singles, professionals graduates with a minimum GPA of 8.5 and have at least two years of full-time work experience.

- Beit Trust
The Beit Trust offers annually a number of Postgraduate Masters or PhD Scholarships abroad for studies or research to graduates who are domiciled in Malawi, Zambia or Zimbabwe (the beneficial area) Scholarships are taken up at a university in the United Kingdom, Ireland or South Africa, for study in a subject of the individual’s choice appropriate to the needs of the beneficial area.
- Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.
Education Fund have set themselves the aim of preparing students to promote almost all fields of study, degrees and types of higher education. Undergraduate students studying in the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering who are experiencing financial difficulty may be considered for an award from the Professor Leslie Reginald Blake Memorial Fund (‘the Blake Memorial Fund’).
- Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds
The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds awards PhD fellowships to outstanding junior scientists (max. age: 27 years) who wish to pursue an ambitious PhD project of approximately 3 years in basic biomedical research in an internationally leading laboratory.
- Bosworth Smith Trust Fund
Approximately £5000 in total is available for grants for the assistance of postgraduate research in metal mining, nonferrous extraction metallurgy or mineral dressing.
- British Council IELTS Scholarships Award
The British Council IELTS Scholarship Award was launched with the objective of supporting Indian students intending to study in an English-speaking country. Most importantly, it is a commitment to realizing British Council’s aspiration of enabling young people to achieve their life goals.
Every year, eight scholarships worth INR 300, 000/- are awarded to candidates across the country. This amount is awarded towards Tuition Fees and is paid directly to the university.

The British Council in India lists a number of different opportunities for students from India who study in the UK. It also has a useful scholarship guide that you can download from their website.
- British Federation of Women Graduates Scholarships
The British Federation of Women Graduates scholarships are for women who will be in their third year of doctoral studies or part time equivalent at the time when the awards are given out (the autumn of each year). The awards are given on the basis of evidence of academic excellence as shown on the application form, referee reports and, for those shortlisted, brief presentations of their research to a panel of academics. The amounts offered in awards range upwards from £1000 with the average award being around £3000. The number of awards made each year depends on the funds available and on the quality of the applications but six to ten awards are usually given. The final selection is made in June/July of each year and awards are given out in October/November.

- Chevening Scholarships

Sheila Anderson graduated from Bristol in 1956, and went on to pursue a career in law, working both as a barrister and in-house lawyer throughout her life. - Fulbright University of Bristol Award
The Fulbright University of Bristol Award is offered to a US citizen for the first year of a postgraduate degree in any field at the University of Bristol. The successful candidate will be selected by the Fulbright Commission to receive a grant to be used towards tuition fees and living costs.
- G Vernon Hobson Bequest
The Bequest was established for the 'advancement of teaching and practice of geology as applied to mining'. One or more awards may therefore be made for travel, research or other objects in accordance with these terms (up to a value of £1,300).
- GB China Educational Trust Scholarships
The Great Britain-China Educational Trust (GBCET) administers its own awards, and also makes awards with funds contributed by the Sino-British Fellowship Trust, the Universities' China Committee in London, and the Han Suyin Trust. The awards are meant to contribute towards essential fees and living expenses.
The funds awarded via the Han Suyin Trust are specifically for those Chinese(PRC) candidates who hold a recognised medical degree, or a degree in the field of science and technology with some work experience at the relevant level. Environmental topics, and in particular forestry and coastal studies, will be given preference.

The Gen Foundation is a charitable trust that provides grants to students or researchers in biological, chemical, botanical, and food sciences. Exceptional candidates in language, music, and art may also be considered.
- Global Education Program
The University of Bristol is part of the Global Education Programme, the Russian government-sponsored funding program designed to provide Russian citizens with opportunity for graduate and postgraduate studies at leading foreign higher educational institutions.
The Global Education Programme intends to distribute 4.41 billion Russian rubles to at least 1,500 participants in 2014-2016. This applies only to full-time graduate programs in the areas of: Science, Engineering, Medicine, Education and Management.
As well as tuition fees, the grant will cover travel expenses to and from the student’s place of residence to the university, medical insurance, accommodation, meals, and academic literature.

- Henry Lester Trust
The Henry Lester Trust Limited, named after Henry Lester who spent most of his life in Shanghai and who died there in 1926, considers applications for a grant from those who are Citizens of the People's Republic of China, and who are studying at a United Kingdom university or research establishment at postgraduate level who are studying or researching in the subject areas of architecture (to include civic planning, construction management, etc), medicine, computer development, and mechanical sciences.
- Hong Kong Alumni Scholarships
This scholarship is offered by the Hong Kong Branch of the Bristol University Alumni Association in Hong Kong. It is awarded on the grounds of academic excellence, financial need and future potential contribution to Hong Kong. The Scholarship will be £15,000, to be offset against the tuition fees payable to the university, for a one year masters degree programme in any field of study.
- Hong Kong Research Grant
The Society offers a single annual £2,500 research grant to a postgraduate student in the UK or Greater China region who intends to undertake geographical research in the Greater China region (People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, Macau SAR and Hong Kong SAR).
- Hudswell International Research Scholarships
The late P S Hudswell, a former IET member, left a substantial bequest to provide awards in support of research undertaken by members in the fields of electrical, electronic or manufacturing engineering, to assist IET members with research work leading to the award of a doctorate. The research programme must be undertaken outside the applicant’s home country. Applicants must be in the first or second year of the research programme.

- International Hardship Fund
The International Hardship Fund has been set up to provide emergency financial assistance to international students, who find themselves in unexpected financial difficulty, as a result of a significant or unexpected event that could not have been predicted.
Students seeking help must demonstrate that they had made adequate arrangements to support themselves and pay their tuition and accommodation fees before they came to University, and that these arrangements have been affected by unforeseen circumstances, or events beyond their control.

The purpose of the Fund is to help with expenses incurred by Music students of the University in pursuit of musical studies in an area for which a grant is not otherwise available to them. - Knowlson Trust travel award
The Knowlson Trust Travel Awards are available for travel which is not part of the applicant's academic studies. Successful applicants are likely to be those who are making a wider contribution to society (eg voluntary work overseas) or who are undertaking individual physical challenges, and who have a purpose rather than simply planning an adventurous holiday.
- Krebs Memorial Scholarship
An appeal was launched at the Biochemical Society's meeting in December 1982 to commemorate the life and work of Sir Hans Krebs, FRS, by instituting a postgraduate (PhD) scholarship in biochemistry or an allied biomedical science, tenable at any British university. The generous response of many of Sir Hans' pupils, colleagues and admirers in many countries has provided sufficient funds to allow a scholarship to be awarded in alternate years.
The scholarship is primarily intended to be a mark of exceptional academic distinction and recognition of outstanding promise; it is not a means of 'topping up' grants already received from other sources.
- Lady Meherbai D. Tata Education Trust Scholarships
The Lady Meherbai D. Tata Education Trust awards scholarships to Indian women graduates of recognized Indian universities to pursue higher education abroad.
- Ladyman Bequest
This bequest is to enable members of the Music Department to have a grant to attend a chamber music course, normally in a vacation. If any of you are involved in an ensemble and would like to attend such a course, please get in touch with the Director of Teaching.
- Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust bursary (Postgraduate)
This bursary is designed to help UK-resident postgraduate students with up to £5,000 towards the cost of their tuition or other course related costs, whilst studying on a full-time postgraduate degree course at a UK university.
- Leverhulme Trade Charities Trust bursary (Undergraduate)
This bursary is available to undergraduate students studying a first-degree course who are the children or spouses of commercial travellers, chemists or grocers, and who are in financial need.
The aim is to support eligible students with a bursary of up to £3,000 a year towards the cost of an undergraduate degree.

This Fund established in 1963, provides scholarships for selected Hong Kong residents candidates to pursue postgraduate studies in universities or institutions overseas.
- Lloyd Robinson Sporting Awards
A few scholarships are awarded each year to students of exceptional sporting ability who demonstrate great need, for instance those who may require additional funding to compete at national level competition and above. Recipients of this award, worth up to £250 p/a, are required to become members of the High Performance Sports Squad.

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, named after the double Nobel Prize winning Polish-French scientist famed for her work on radioactivity, support researchers at all stages of their careers, irrespective of nationality. Researchers working across all disciplines, from life-saving healthcare to 'blue-sky' science, are eligible for funding. The MSCA also support industrial doctorates, combining academic research study with work in companies, and other innovative training that enhances employability and career development.
- Marshal Papworth Scholarship
The Marshal Papworth Fund was established in 2001 to provide one year scholarships to educate agricultural and horticultural students from developing countries.
- Marshall Partnership Scholarships
This Scholarship is for Graduate Study in any subject at either Masters or Doctoral level at the University of Bristol and will be for up to two years (with a possibility of a third year for doctoral studies). If awarded a Bristol Marshall Scholarship candidates would be expected to study at the University of Bristol.
- Martin Lynn Scholarship
This award reflects the interests of the man it commemorates. Annually the Society will make an award of up to £1,000 to assist an historian pursuing postgraduate research on a topic in African history.

The Department of Music have a number of Scholarships, Bursaries and Prizes.
- NHS Social Work bursaries
These bursaries are for degree or diploma courses in social work and are supplied by the NHS Business Services Authority who administer them on behalf of the Department of Health.
- Napier Miles Book Prize
A Music Department Award for outstanding work in the second year.
- Nita's fund
Undergraduate Veterinary Science students in financial difficulty may be considered for an award from Nita's Fund. The Fund is mainly used to assist students who are in the fourth and fifth years of their Veterinary Science course, although students in other years who are in hardship may also be considered.
- Ocean Postgraduate Scholarship
The Ocean Scholarship Competition offers one postgraduate student £1,000 towards their course fees. Please note: This is not a University of Bristol Scholarship. - Organ and Choral Scholarships
The University offers organ scholarships at St Mary Redcliffe Church, Bristol Cathedral and St Paul's Church, Clifton. There are also choral scholarships available at St Mary Redcliffe Church and Bristol Cathedral. These are open to all full-time students, whether or not they are studying for a Music degree.
- Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Scholarships
The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) is a parastatal of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources established by Decree 25 of 1973 for the purposes of development, promotion and implementation of petroleum technology and manpower needs through research and training of Nigerians.
- Phyllis and Eileen Gibbs Travelling Research Fellowship
This Travelling Fellowship has been endowed with the object of assisting women graduates who have considerable experience of research (normally beyond the doctoral level), who intend to undertake fieldwork projects outside the British isles (and normally not within their own countries of residence) in Biology, Archaeology, Social Anthropology, or Sociology, with preference for Archaeology or Biology. - Postgraduate Solutions Limited

- Postgraduate Study Loan
From the 2016/17 academic year, the Government will provide a loan of up to £10,000 per student for postgraduate Masters-level study. Part-time students studying over two years can access £5,000 in the first year and the rest of the loan in the second year.
The loan is a contribution towards the costs of study, it's your choice how much to borrow and whether to use the loan for tuition fees, living costs or other costs.

- Professor Sir Eric Thomas Bursaries
These awards have been generously funded through donations by Alumni and friends in honour of the outstanding endeavour and legacy of the former University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Eric Thomas.
In 2016/17, five students who are currently in receipt of an Access to Bristol bursary in the final year of their undergraduate studies - and who are due to complete their undergraduate degree in the Summer of 2016 - may be eligible for an Access to Bristol Postgraduate Bursary.
- Professor Sir Eric Thomas Postgraduate Widening Participation Bursaries
The Professor Sir Eric Thomas Postgraduate Bursaries are available to up to 4 Home/ EU students starting postgraduate courses at the University of Bristol in Autumn 2016.
The bursary is for £10,000 in the academic year 2016/17. If your course lasts for longer than a year, payments will be split across 2 years, but will not amount to more than £10,000.
- Raymond Warren Prize in Composition
This was endowed on the retirement of Professor Warren in July 1994 in recognition of his unique contribution to the teaching of composition at the University of Bristol and his own distinguished work as a composer. The prize will be awarded to a final year student or a postgraduate on the basis of outstanding achievement or potential in musical composition.
- Robert S. McNamara Fellowship
The Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program was established in 1982 by a resolution of the Executive Directors to award fellowships for full-time study or research at the postgraduate level in fields related to economic development.
- Roberto Rocca Education Program Fellowships
For exceptional university graduates from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Mexico, Romania and Venezuela, the Roberto Rocca Education Program offers fellowships to help fund studies towards the Ph.D. degree in specific fields of study that include Materials Science, Mechanical, and Petroleum Engineering (see Eligibility requirements), at a university of the student's choosing outside his or her home country.

- Said Foundation Scholarship
Säid Foundation Scholarships aims to provide exceptional students with educational opportunities that will help with their career development. Applicants must hold the equivalent of an UK undergraduate 2:1 degree or higher. Applications must be submitted online by 1 November 2016, 23.59 UK time
- Sanctuary Scholarship Scheme
The aim of the Sanctuary Scholarship Scheme is to enhance opportunities for people from asylum seeking and refugee communities, and to aid integration. We recognise that individuals from refugee backgrounds face additional barriers in accessing higher education and employment.
We are therefore offering scholarships to eligible applicants to promote success in higher education.
- Santander postgraduate scholarship
The Santander scholarships are aimed at candidates from Central and South America who demonstrate the highest level of academic achievement. There are ten awards available each year for £5,000 each, normally offset against tuition fees.
- Sasakawa Japanese Studies Studentship
This is a ‘one-year scholarship’ for PhD students who want to pursue a Japan-related topic within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law, University of Bristol, with no guarantee for further funding.
- Schlumberger Foundation Fellowship Awards
The Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future program, launched in 2004, awards fellowships to women from developing and emerging economies to pursue PhD or post-doctoral studies in the physical sciences, engineering and technology at leading universities abroad.
- Science Without Borders
Science Without Borders enables Brazilian students to receive scholarships for undergraduate sandwich courses, PhD sandwich courses and full PhD programmes at participating universities across the world to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
- Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowships
The Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fellowships aim at financing outstanding Hong Kong students for overseas postgraduate studies. They are expected to contribute significantly to the development of Hong Kong after graduation.
- Sir Ratan Tata Scholarship
The Trust awards merit scholarships to students pursuing undergraduate and post-graduate studies in India. The objective of the programme is to encourage outstandingly meritorious / deserving students to pursue academic excellence.
- Sir Ratanji Dalal Research Scholarship
Applications are invited for this Research Scholarship, which is to support a project in either tropical surgery, or tropical medicine. If the research will not be carried out in a tropical country, the relevance of the project to tropical medicine or surgery should be made clear.
There is one scholarship available, tenable for one year, to the value of £20,000. The fellowship is open to all medical practitioners registered in any part of the Commonwealth. It may be held in any institution in Britain or overseas, approved by The Royal College of Surgeons of England and The Royal College of Physicians of London who jointly award the Scholarship.
- Sir Robert Black Trust Fund Postgraduate Scholarships
The Fund, which was established in 1961, provides awards to individuals in pursuit of postgraduate studies or other training programmes at local or overseas institutions.
- Slawson Awards
By the kind generosity of Fellows Paul and Mary Slawson, the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) offers three to four awards annually, of up to £3,000 each, for PhD students intending to carry out geographical field research.
- Society for Underwater Technology Scholarship
Sponsorship for Gifted Students in Marine Science and Engineering to meet industry's critical shortage of suitably qualified entrants.
- Spaceways Scholarship
The SpaceWays Scholarship is designed to recognise the ability of students to create an innovative customer acquisition campaign for a young internet start-up. Two scholarships of £1,000 each will be provided annually to students that are be able to surprise, impress, and inspire us. We strongly believe that entrepreneurs are an essential motor for our fast-paced society and we are convinced that these programmes can help us transmit the values that drive us day after day, to students, the entrepreneurs of the future.

- The Thouron Award Scholarship

- Thomas Beecham Scholarship
Music Department Scholarship: This is awarded at the end of the first year of study and renewed (subject to satisfactory progress) for a further two years - the last payment being made after graduation. Normally, the award (value £250 per annum) is made to an outstanding instrumentalist on the basis of the Year 1 examination and is primarily intended to support a programme of lessons in the following academic year.
- Thornton Tomasetti Foundation (TTF) Scholarship
The scholarship will be awarded to a student about to enter the final year of a Masters programme (MEng or equivalent), or start a standalone Masters programme (MSc or equivalent), in any civil, structural or architectural engineering course. Both full-time and part-time students are eligible for the award. The award is based on a candidate’s career goals, academic accomplishment and demonstrated interest in the integration of engineering and architecture.

There are many trusts and charities in the country that can provide grants (usually small) to assist students in financial need, provided they meet the necessary criteria.
- UK Passport Services – Financial Aid Competition
An exciting new travel-writing competition has been launched by UKPS with a first prize award of $500. This competition is open to US and UK students who are invited to submit an essay based on our suggested title.

- US Loans for American Students
The University of Bristol is eligible to certify loan applications for Direct Loans, also known as Title IV loans. These loans are borrowed directly from the US Federal Government, who determine the terms and interest rates that apply to the loans. Further information is available at www.studentloans.gov.

- University of Bristol Alumni Scholarship
University of Bristol alumni who go on to study for a postgraduate degree – either taught or research – at Bristol can benefit from a 10 per cent reduction in tuition fees.
The 10 per cent discount is available for students who start their postgraduate degree on or after 1 October 2017 and will be applied to their tuition fees for the full duration of the programme.

The bet365 Foundation Bursary supports first-year students who are from low income backgrounds and who are studying a single honours undergraduate Law degree. - Zutshi-Smith Scholarship
This award covers the full cost for an Indian student to undertake a PhD course at the University of Bristol. Applicants must have accepted an offer from the University of Bristol to study for a PhD course, expecting to begin in Autumn 2016.
Applicants must be ordinarily resident in India, and preference will be given to applicants of Kashmiri origin.
