You must complete registration by the end of the second week of teaching for your course.
To be fully registered you must:
Some students have additional steps to complete registration:
- If you are subject to immigration control
Book an appointment to complete a student document check (right to study) when you arrive in the UK.
- If you are on professional course
Some professional courses require you to complete occupational health and/or Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks. Your faculty will contact you if this is required.
Students on an online or distance learning course
If you are studying on a distance learning course, you have different steps to complete registration.
How to register
To confirm your registration details, you need:
- your student number (found at the top of your offer document) or your UCAS personal ID (undergraduate students only).
- your family name (surname) and date of birth.
During registration, you will:
- Check your details are correct in your student record.
- Confirm your acceptance of the Student Agreement conditions.
- Create a password for your University of Bristol accounts. Keep it secure until you have memorised it.
- Download and save Your Registration Details. This contains important information, such as your student number and faculty.
- Set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) for your University of Bristol account to help keep your information secure.
If you have decided not to study or you want to defer until next year, contact your school/centre.
Confirm your registration details
Registration opens on 30 August 2023 and the deadline to confirm your registration details is 8 September 2023 for most students.
If your course has different registration dates you will be contacted directly.

After you have confirmed your registration details
Once you have confirmed your details and set up multi-factor authentication, you will have access to your University of Bristol account, including email and Blackboard.

Collect and activate your UCard
You must confirm your registration details and upload your photo to be able to collect your UCard.
You will be able to upload your photo as soon as you have confirmed your registration details. To save on waiting times, upload your photo before arrival.
You will receive an email explaining how to collect your UCard on 13 or 14 September 2023.
Some students will be able to collect their UCard at their accommodation. Others will need to make an appointment to collect their card from the UCard collection hub at the Hawthorns.
Book an appointment if your email asks you to do so.
You will need your student number and photo identification (ID) to collect your UCard.
Activate your UCard
Once you have collected your UCard, you will need to swipe it on a wall-mounted card reader (or library entrance card reader) for 10 to 15 seconds to activate it and complete registration.
Students on an online or distance learning course
- Confirm your registration details.
- You will receive an email asking you to complete a Start your studies form when you are due to start your course induction. You will not be fully registered until you complete the form.
Completing the form confirms you are ready to actively engage with study. You do not need to do it before the start date of your course.
Students on a distance learning course do not need to collect and activate a UCard.
