Support with emergency evacuations
Some students need a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) to stay safe during emergencies.
On this page:
Who needs a PEEP
If you need assistance or specific arrangements during the emergency evacuation of a University building, you probably need a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP).
Your circumstances could be permanent or temporary and might relate to a disability. You could:
- have a hearing or visual impairment
- have a mobility impairment
- have a condition that makes it hard to respond, such as seizures
- be negatively affected by loud noises or bright, flashing lights.
During an emergency, the lifts will not work and power-assisted doors become manually operated.
What is a PEEP
A PEEP is your personal document that explains what you should do if there is an emergency in a University building, such as a fire.
It also makes sure all relevant University staff members know how to support you.
We will put a copy of your PEEP in:
- the building’s fire box, for the fire service to use
- your student record, where our relevant wellbeing staff can view it
- our staff intranet, where staff from your school and our facilities, partnerships, wellbeing, disability, safety and health teams can view it.
You should display your PEEP in your bedroom too.
We are legally responsible for coordinating your safe evacuation from our buildings. A PEEP is very important for students who need one.
How to get a PEEP
You may need a PEEP for your University accommodation and another PEEP for each building where you study.
University accommodation
If you apply for University accommodation we will ask some questions to decide whether you need a PEEP. We can create one for your University accommodation and for all the buildings where you study.
To request a PEEP for your University accommodation another time, email student-accommodation@bristol.ac.uk.
Study buildings
If you do not apply for University accommodation, you should contact your school office to request a PEEP.
They will ask some questions to decide whether you need a PEEP for the buildings where you study.
Disability support
If you have a disability, you should also request study support. We could offer you reasonable adjustments for teaching and assessments.
