Danlu's story

Danlu shares their story about first impressions and finding your place at Bristol.

Danlu’s experience

"I’m Danlu Chen, a PhD student in Comparative Literatures and Cultures at Bristol. When I got my offer two years ago, I was excited and curious about starting my PhD – but also a bit nervous, because I didn’t know anyone and had never lived or studied in the UK before. Luckily, everyone I met was so kind and welcoming. The reception staff at my accommodation helped me feel at ease speaking English when I first arrived.

My supervisors have been amazing – they give me great academic advice and lots of encouragement. And the university organised so many welcome events and training sessions, which made settling in much easier.

What I love most about Bristol is that the longer you stay, the more you fall in love with it. I enjoy the green spaces – College Green, the Suspension Bridge, and Leigh Woods are my favourites.

I also love the arts and cultural life here, from theatres and dance clubs to the famous Bristol Balloon Fiesta. If you’re feeling unsure about starting out, my advice is: trust yourself, and trust the people around you – you’ll find plenty of kindness, support, and friendship here in Bristol."
