Migration, Borders and Policy Research Group

Our activities aim to improve academic and public knowledge. The group draws on long-standing research in poverty and social justice and social harm in the School for Policy Studies (SPS). All colleagues are involved in the teaching programmes of SPS.

Overview

The Migration, Borders and Policy Research Group is part of the Migration Mobilities Bristol Faculty Research Centre and we collaborate with the Migration Research Group in the School of Sociology, Politics and International Relations SPAIS Migration Research Group – Migration Mobilities Bristol.

Research themes

Our research focuses on migration in local, national and international contexts. We study:

  • the production of knowledge on migration and its use in policy;
  • harm at the borders;
  • child migration;
  • migration, poverty and exclusion;
  • integration policy.

Our group’s goals

The Group brings together academic colleagues, Postgraduate and Early Career Researchers. We collaborate across disciplinary and geographical boundaries and within diverse theoretical and methodological frameworks.

Our research has an international reach. We investigate the the social and economic contexts of migration and the impact of policy on people, their lives and deaths. As a group, the geographical scope of our research covers the UK, the European Union, West Africa, Latin America and many individual countries. We have well-established links with civil society organisations in Bristol, across the UK and with the global policy community including the European Commission, UNDESA, UNICEF, IDAC and IOM.
