Student Choice

Student Choice Placements are offered in Years 2 and 3. For more information on each of the available teaching opportunities please see below.

Why supervise a student choice placement?

Useful to your practice, e.g. undertaking quality improvement, developing patient materials or helping to evaluate your service.
Students are enthusiastic having chosen a project they want to do
Engage with, inspire and be inspired by the next generation of clinicians
Funding is available

Year 2 Placements

At a glance:

Placements run in September/October
Placements are 3 weeks long
Each year around January we ask for placement proposals for Autumn of that year.
There is funding available.
Placement supervisors don't have to be in a salaried or partnership role, and can include other healthcare professionals within your team (locums, practice manager, pharmacist, ANP, physician assistant etc) and any other community or third sector contacts you may have

Placements are 6 weeks long
Each Autumn we invite proposals for the following academic year.
There is funding available to pay for your time or other people's time.
Placement supervisors don't have to be in a salaried or partnership role, and can include other healthcare professionals within your team (locums, practice manager, pharmacist, ANP, physician assistant etc) and any other community or third sector contacts you may have
Placements should help students to explore ‘evidence- based medicine in the broadest sense’. Students will choose an area of study, collect data, analyse it and reflect on its use in clinical settings. Students will be expected to work largely independently with some support.
The primary care teaching team are able to organise any room bookings for central teaching that may be needed and organise any payments to third parties that are required.
In 2026, primary care ran three student choice projects: GPs at the Deep End, Migrant Health and Women's Health. Each supervisor put together their own programme but we ran a joint induction and students were able to attend seminars etc that were running for a different primary care student choice project if they were interested in the subject.
