Pneumonia
Studies and trials
FoCUS*
Patients who have been hospitalised with pneumonia are often advised to have a follow-up chest x-ray around 6-8 weeks after they recover. This is to check that the infection has cleared up and to make sure there isn't an underlying lung condition that might have been hidden by the pneumonia. This study looks at how good follow-up chest x-rays are at finding lung cancer and other lung conditions in patients who have recovered from pneumonia.
ASPECT*
ASPECT is a large randomised controlled trial to test whether aspirin reduces the risk of a heart attack or stroke in patients who are admitted to hospital with pneumonia.
James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership*
The JLA involves both patients and clinicians equally in setting priorities for research.
Avon CAP
AvonCAP aims to evaluate the disease burden of pneumonia and other respiratory infections, working closely with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to determine the effect of all vaccinations against respiratory disease in patients hospitalised with lung infection.
HARISS
A UKHSA enhanced hospital surveillance programme that helps monitor acute respiratory infection (such as pneumonia) caused by Influenza, COVID-19 and Respiratory Syncitial Virus (RSV). It aims to improve understanding of how many older adults are hospitalised with these infections, assess how well vaccines prevent hospital admission and severe disease, and collect samples from patients to track the viruses and inform World Health Organisation recommendations.
