Liberal Arts Study Guide 2025/26

Our rich and challenging liberal arts programme allows you to explore the Arts and Humanities while building crucial skills in analysis and communication that will be valuable to you throughout your studies. Study Abroad (Liberal Arts pathway) students have the unique advantage of being able to choose units from across the School of Arts, the School of Humanities, and the School of Modern Languages.

Pre-requisites

At UK universities, students specialise from their first year and rarely take units outside their degree subject. This means that:

  • Year 1 units are suitable for all students.
  • Year 2 units require some university study in the discipline.
  • Year 3 units require a strong background in the discipline.
  • Masters-level units require three years of study in the discipline.

Subject pathway students

Students nominated on the Liberal Arts Subject Pathway are strongly encouraged to take at least one unit from this study guide. These are units designed specifically for Liberal Arts students, and will give you the opportunity to hone your interdisciplinary skills, and meet and integrate with Bristol Liberal Arts students.

You can also select units from Arts, Humanities and Modern Languages subjects. Please review the following study guides for information on the units you can request:
