Competitions, challenges and funding

What is the New Enterprise Competition?

The University of Bristol holds an annual enterprise competition which gives current students, staff and recent alumni three opportunities to apply to and pitch for start-up funding.

If you have a great idea for a new business, service, or product you could win funding and support to make it happen. Every year we award up to £40,000 to students and graduates - all generously sponsored by our industry partners.

The ideas can be social enterprises, charities, or traditional business models, it doesn't matter! What we look for are good ideas we believe could be developed into a viable business.

Start-up Ideas and Development stages are all about developing your new and fresh ideas so they can be tested and validated and ready to enter the Start-up Growth stage for a larger slice of prize money. Please note, you don't need to enter any particular stage before applying for a later stage in the competition.

How does it work?

  • Start-up Ideas - funding of up to £500 to trial and test your ideas.
  • Start-up Development - funding of up to £1,000 to validate and prove your business concept.
  • Start-up Growth - available funding of up to £20,000 and pro-bono support from our sponsors to develop and grow your start-up into a full-scale operation. Applications for this round will open in spring term.

Am I eligible?

  • The New Enterprise Competition Ideas and Development stages are open to any current University of Bristol student or graduate from the last 3 years.
  • The Growth stage is also open to University of Bristol staff members
  • This competition is for new enterprises. Your business/charity/social enterprise ideas are ineligible if they have been trading for more than 6 months. If you have any questions over your eligibility then please email us at
