Accessing IT services from home

Accessing systems

We recommend you use our online systems when accessing them remotely to get the best and most reliable service. You can access the following services and systems remotely:

Blackboard and MyBristol

Access Blackboard and MyBristol over the internet by logging in using your UoB login.

Email and calendar

Access your email and calendar using your UoB login.

File storage

Microsoft OneDrive provides large cloud storage for you to upload and store files. You can access these files from anywhere. Access your OneDrive.

Skype for Business

To stay in touch with your friends and university support services we have made Skype for Business available to you to. It can be used as an instant messenger and to make calls to fellow students and staff when required.  Read our Instructions how to download Skype for Business and the user guide.

Microsoft 365 portal

You can access all your Office 365 apps from the Microsoft 365 portal.

If you need to install Microsoft 365 on your home device

Microsoft Office 365 is available for free to install on up to five personally owned devices. This is the full version of Office, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and OneDrive for Business. Install Office 365.


Library resources and search tools are available. Please note that searching for journals online, even with the University VPN, may not give you access. Please use the search tools provided by the Library.

Specialist software

If you need to use some specific software you may need to be logged in using the Student Remote Desktop.

Please only use the Remote Desktop if you need to and disconnect when finished.

If you need help

If you are unable to access online teaching, learning opportunities or assessments, please let your School know.

Virtual student laptop and mobile clinic

A virtual student laptop and mobile clinic has been set up to replace the face-to-face service that previously ran on campus. The laptop and mobile clinic is a free service to help current University of Bristol students who are having problems with laptops, tablets.
