If you need a GP

If you are unable to make an appointment with us, you can be seen as a temporary resident at a GP surgery near you. You do not have to pre-register, just fill out a temporary resident form at the surgery and this will cover you for 3 months.

For medical students on placement outside of Bristol there are nominated surgeries that provide cover. These are listed at the bottom of this page.

What if I’m abroad?

For medico-legal reasons we are unable to offer medical advice or support to any patients who are not in the United Kingdom.

If you are on a year abroad then you must register with a health service in that country.

We are unable to prescribe medication to patients who are outside of the UK. We can usually prescribe two months of medication to take with you.

Finished your degree?

If you are no longer a student but continue to live in Bristol within our catchment area, you can stay registered at the Student health Service. If you move out of area or back home or to another city, you will need to register with a new GP as soon as possible. Your electronic medical records will automatically be transferred to your new GP surgery when you do so, 

If you need a repeat prescription

If you are planning to go abroad on holiday or travelling and require regular medication it is a good idea to have a medication review before you go away: make an appointment

If you have a regular repeat prescription and wish to collect if from a local pharmacy, you can nominate that pharmacy when you speak to the GP or nurse.

Stress and mental health problems

If you are away from Bristol for some time and need ongoing support then we would recommend that you register as a temporary resident with a local GP surgery. We are unable to safely manage new or worsening mental health problems if you are away from Bristol.
