Izzy Van Der Straaten

Sport: Rugby

Degree: Geography

I’m Izzy van der Straaten, a current Gold Scholar at the University of Bristol, where I also represent the university in the BUCS Premier Division. I began playing rugby at the age of eight, and since then, sport has become a defining part of my life. Over the years, I’ve progressed steadily through the age-grade pathway, continually developing my technical skills, game understanding, and leadership on and off the pitch.

A major milestone in my journey came with my selection for the England U18s Women’s squad in 2023/2024 and the 2024/2025 season where I earned several caps on international tours (such as the U18s Six Nations). Representing my country at that level was a huge honor and gave me an invaluable experience competing against some of the best young players in the world.

At club level, I’m proud to be part of the Bristol Bears Women’s Senior Squad, competing in the Premiership Women’s Rugby (PWR). I’ve already featured in the Premiership Cup, where I was fortunate enough to score a few tries and gain my first senior-level experience within a professional environment. Being surrounded by such high-calibre athletes and coaches has massively accelerated my development and given me a clear understanding of the standards required at the top level.

Looking ahead, my goal is to earn selection for the England U20s, where I have already had some involvement in 2025, and continue to make an impact with the Bears in the PWR. I’m passionate about constantly improving every aspect of my game — from my physical performance and technical execution to my tactical awareness and resilience. Ultimately, I aspire to keep progressing through the national pathway and make my mark in the professional women’s game.
