Congratulations to CDT cohort 10 student Sam Harding for his recent paper added to arXiv,"A Platform for Evanescently Trapping Rb-87 Using Silicon Nitride Strip Waveguides Buried in Silica"
Sam says "Building on Bristol’s long-standing love affair with integrated photonics, Carrie and I are exploring how to use photonic chips to trap ultracold atoms. By letting multiple colours of light spill out from the chip's waveguides, we've designed a way to hold atoms less than a micron above its surface. The approach could open new doors for compact atomic clocks and accelerometers, but it's also a case of “a solution looking for a problem” - I'm excited to see what else this idea could be used for.
