CAPC is a leading centre for primary care research and teaching in the UK, and one of nine centres that form the NIHR School for Primary Care Research. It is part of Bristol Medical School, an internationally recognised centre of excellence for population health research and teaching. Researchers work closely with patients and the public to make sure its research focuses on what really matters to people and communities.
The appointments come at an exciting time for CAPC, as the NHS shifts its focus from hospital to community, analogue to digital, and sickness to prevention, placing primary care at the heart of its plans. At the same time, the Royal College of General Practitioners has just launched its Research Roadmap, setting out a shared direction over the next three years to embed research and evidence at the heart of general practice.
Dr Johnson said: “Excellent primary and community care are essential for people’s health, and CAPC’s members undertake vital research to underpin health and care services. I look forward to supporting our members and working with our partners and communities to improve the health of people in and beyond Bristol.”
Dr Watson said: “This is an important time for academic primary care, with community care, digital innovation and reducing health inequalities at the heart of NHS reform. CAPC has world-leading expertise in these areas, and I look forward to working with colleagues to build on our strengths, support our people and ensure our research continues to make a real difference to patients.”
Professor Turner said: “It has been an honour leading CAPC over the last 10 years. I am delighted to be able to hand over its leadership to two outstanding colleagues who, between them, have almost 40 years’ experience in clinical academic roles.”
