Doctoral Training Partnerships

The School receives a yearly allocation of studentships from the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) for Particle Physics and Astrophysics PhD projects. We also receive an allocation of studentships from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) for all other physics-based PhD projects across our research themes.

To be eligible the applicant must meet the entry requirements for the PhD programme they are applying for and the eligibility criteria for EPSRC or STFC awards. They are awarded to suitably qualified eligible candidates on a competitive basis and cover their tuition fees and living expenses for up to 3.5 years.

Studentships

The School receives a number of CASE awards to facilitate collaborative research with an industrial partner or a government laboratory each year. Members of the Physics School offer individual studentships attached to particular grants from UK or EU Research Councils with each years intake, you can find out more about these opportunities by contacting the relevant supervisors.

Scholarships

We accept a wide range of government scholarships from all over the world. You will need to apply for these independently from your home country and not through the university, and then they can liaise with the University on your behalf about your funding and fees.

Self Funding

We welcome well-qualified, self-funded students who can cover the appropriate tuition fees and have enough funding to cover living costs in Bristol. We strongly recommend that any potential self-funded students use the budgeting and living calculator on the University finances webpage to ensure that you are aware and able to cover the costs of study.

Widening Participation Funding Schemes

The University offers and accepts lots of funding schemes and channels for candidates from widening participation backgrounds. You can find a full list of these on the Funding webpages, but some of the most common for Physics postgraduates are:

China Scholarship Council

The University is accepting applications for the China Scholarship Council for students at postgraduate level. The funding provides Chinese students with a monthly stipend as well as airfare costs between China and the UK. You can find out more about eligibility and deadlines on the China Scholarship Council webpage.

Bristol Masters Scholarship

The Bristol Masters Scholarship awards 50 talented home/UK students from widening participation backgrounds £2,000 each towards their taught postgraduate study (MA, MSc or MRes) at the University of Bristol. Applicants must have already applied for a postgraduate taught programme at Bristol to start an application. You can find out more on the Bristol Masters Scholarships webpage.
