Why use openly licensed material?

Most images in books, journals, or on websites are protected by copyright. There are exceptions that allow you to reproduce work under certain conditions, but if your work is going to be published in a journal on a webpage you will need to get permission from the copyright holder in order to include it. This may be time consuming or costly, so you may wish to consider using material available under an open licence.
