Unlocking better pathways from energy debt to debt advice

This research puts forward an evidence-based action plan for improving debt advice referral pathways for energy customers. It calls for greater collaboration between energy suppliers and debt advice providers, adding support to Ofgem’s proposals in its Debt Strategy.

It is based on analysis of three years of StepChange client data (2022-2024); a survey and qualitative interviews with StepChange clients with energy debt; and four expert workshops with representatives from the energy sector, debt advice sector and consumer organisations.
