Monthly stipend payments

The University will now make payments to research students on a monthly basis.

Following a number of requests and the publication of The Bristol Students’ Union’s proposal paper the University will now pay postgraduate research students monthly. This replaces the previous quarterly stipend payments. Moving to monthly payments brings this activity in line with the bursary payments made to PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) students.  

Dates for 2017/18 

Historically students have received their stipend payments on the 1st of the month (or nearest working day) of the following months: October, January, April, July.

By moving to 12 payments, in 2017/18 the payment dates will be as follows:

  • Monday 2 October 2017
  • Wednesday 1 November 2017
  • Friday 1 December 2017
  • Tuesday 2 January 2018
  • Thursday 1 February 2018
  • Thursday 1 March 2018
  • Monday 2 April 2018
  • Tuesday 1 May 2018
  • Friday 1 June 2018
  • Monday 2 July 2018
  • Wednesday 1 August 2018
  • Monday 3 September 2018 

This change will take place with immediate effect. Both new and returning students, in receipt of a stipend, will see the 12 instalments in the financial statement accessed via the Fees & Funding section of the MyBristol portal once the student has completed online registration. This will affect all PhD stipend payments made by the University of Bristol regardless of the source of funding.

Student Choice

There was a request for an element of student choice regarding payment frequencies. This has not been possible for a number of reasons. The current University Student Record System does not enable us to easily capture a preference from the large number of students in receipt of a stipend. The University also has offered student choice for another fund and a significant proportion of students did not provide their choice in time which adversely affected the delivery of that service. Furthermore, when gathering information from other Universities we found that no other institution publishes any information about offering the option to select between quarterly and monthly payments.

We do, however, not wish the move to monthly payments to cause any financial difficulty to any of our students. Therefore students who feel they would be put in a position of hardship by this change should send an email to with a single sentence explaining why they feel they require their payments to be made quarterly. Please ensure that the subject of the email is “Quarterly Stipend Payments Request” and that your name and 7-digit student number is included in the email.
