Assessment and feedback portfolio
Or, how to improve your grades!
The Assessment and Feedback Portfolio is a collection of tools to help students engage with their assessment and feedback. The toolkit was co-created by a team of lecturers and student partners in the School of Biological Sciences in 2021 and has been enhanced and modified in subsequent years.
Feedback Engagement Tool (FET)
One of the key tools from this collection is the Feedback Engagement Tool – an Excel spreadsheet which allows students to track, interpret and plan actions on their feedback. This tool was developed based on the work done by Naomi Winstone and Robert Nash in the DEFT project.
This tool is now available for download by anyone who wishes to use it, however, please complete the accompanying form and email it to us (rose.murray@bristol.ac.uk) before using the tool.
Feedback Engagement Tool (Excel spreadsheet): Feedback Engagement Tool published June 2025
This is the FET suitable for any programme, however the “Resources for Improvement” are based on a practical science course. Please feel free to modify the resources as you see fit for your own programmes, and include any institutional resources you may have. There are instructions on how to modify the spreadsheet within the document.
Feedback Engagement Tool user guide (Word doc.): User Guide published June 2025
This guide is designed for users of the FET (i.e. students). Please feel free to use/edit for your own use alongside the FET spreadsheet.
Supplementary User Information Form (Word doc.): Supplementary user information form published June 2025
Please complete this form and email it to rose.murray@bristol.ac.uk if you intend to use the FET.
