Bristol Institute For Learning and Teaching
Growing our community of scholars
The Bristol Institute for Learning and Teaching (BILT) was established as part of the University Strategy (PDF, 5,079kB).
It provides staff and resources to promote educational excellence in the University. It does this by supporting innovation and scholarship and by ensuring that Bristol’s education is shaped by current research and evidence.
BILT works to develop a culture of educational innovation, agility and transformation to position Bristol as a leader in education across all disciplines.
BILT has a specific focus on developing learning that is flexible, open and inclusive and which is developed in partnership with students.
BILT organises its activities under specific themes to ensure that its various projects and workstreams cohere and deliver. The first of BILT’s themes will be Assessment and other themes will follow in due course. Find out more about BILT's Assessment theme.
BILT will be formally launched in June 2017.

What we do
The Bristol Institute for Learning and Teaching is involved in a wide range of activities:
- Bristol Teaching Awards
The awards recognise and reward members of staff who have made an outstanding contribution to teaching.
- Educational Enhancement Funds
This fund enables us to make grants and scholarships available to its staff to develop and deliver major educational research.
- Sustainability within our courses
We support the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) project. This project aims to enable every student to gain the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values to contribute to a sustainable future.
- Bristol Futures
We support the Bristol Futures curriculum. This curriculum will give our students the chance to broaden their horizons and develop essential transferable skills.
- Best of Bristol lectures
We support the Bristol SU's Best of Bristol lecture series. Watch Best of Bristol lectures from the series.
