At the September APPAP meeting, members heard how their earlier feedback had helped researchers improve study materials. Changes included clearer information sheets, a short introductory video for one study, and a “Prefer not to say” option for sensitive questions about weight and pregnancy loss.

The panel discussed a proposed study of whether a simple blood test could help researchers understand the health of blood vessels. Researchers hope to invite around 300 people who had a particular blood vessel measurement at the @30 clinic to have it measured again, alongside a blood sample. Members advised the team to explain clearly why people are being invited back and to reassure them that updated equipment should make the measurement quicker and more comfortable. They also supported giving people advance notice of questions about their medication, so they can check the details at home.

Members reviewed a new questionnaire for the original parents in Children of the 90s. It covers topics including grandchildren, caring responsibilities, experiences of ageism, eating, and menopause symptoms for women. The panel suggested making the expected completion time clear, explaining unfamiliar questions, and checking whether the menopause section allows people to report symptoms missing from the list. Members welcomed the option to complete the questionnaire in stages.

The group also considered a proposal to estimate some biological fathers’ genetic information using existing data from mothers and children. Members discussed whether this would be appropriate when a father had not provided a genetic sample or consented to genetic research. They felt there were different questions to consider depending on whether the information would help analyse family data or be used to study fathers’ own health. The discussion highlighted the need for clear information, careful governance and further consideration of consent or an opportunity to opt out. No decision was made and further discussion is needed.
