Entry requirements for postgraduate offer holders

The aim of the pre-sessional course(s) are to provide you with tuition so you can demonstrate a level of academic English and study skills needed by the University of Bristol. You can apply for the pre-sessional course you feel is most appropriate for you by ticking the relevant box on your online Offer Letter for your postgraduate degree. You can find more application information on our how to apply page.

As a postgraduate offer holder, you must assess your current score and your entry requirements using the drop-down boxes below. (If you are an Undergraduate offer holder, please contact CELFS: celfs-summer@bristol.ac.uk)

CELFS staff cannot advise which pre-sessional course you should take.

All pre-sessional applicants must provide a valid official Secure English Language Test (SELT) certificate. Further information about SELTs and English language Profiles can be found on the University of Bristol Postgraduate Prospectus.

A valid SELT for the IFP is:

  • An IELTS test taken at a secure test centre - Effective 6 April 2015, the UKVI introduced a new list of approved IELTS test centres. IELTS tests taken after 5 April 2015 at centres other than these approved centres will no longer be considered Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) by the UKVI.
  • An IELTS certificate with a UKVI reference number on it
  • An IELTS Academic test. We do not accept the IELTS Life Skills test.
  • Your IELTS scores must meet the entry requirements for the pre-sessional course you apply for.
  • A certificate that is less than 2 years old.
  • A valid IELTS certificate looks like this Sample IELTS certificate (PDF, 678kB)
