Academic routes

You will study three units in Academic English in the Centre for English Language and Foundation Studies. You will also study one maths unit in the School of Mathematics and one open unit from the Faculty of Science or Engineering. Students who have successfully completed this programme have gone on to study maths, statistics, finance, and computer science at Bristol.

1. LANG00006 Academic Writing (30 credits)

   This units aims to introduce and practise the process of planning, drafting evaluating and editing written academic work, moving from descriptive paragraphs to analytical/evaluative essays. It explores a range of academic functions, features of style and organisation, and academic grammar and vocabulary in order to improve your overall academic literacy.

2. LANG00007 Text Response (20 credits)

   This unit explores the difference between descriptive explanations and evaluative critiques when reacting to different texts. It will help develop critical questioning, reading and listening skills, academic vocabulary and summary/critique writing.

3. LANG00008 Academic Speaking (10 credits)

   This unit aims to introduce and practise the skills and language required for effective participation in academic seminars, tutorials and presentations. It explores the features of interactional and transactional language within a range of university scenarios and topics.

4. MATH10100 Maths 1AM (40 credits)

   This advanced unit consists of calculus, computational mathematics, linear algebra and multivariable calculus. Alternatively, you could choose MATH10300, Mathematics 1AS, which focuses on statistics instead of further mathematics. There are regular tutorials, computational practical sessions and assignments.

5. MATH10600 Maths 1EM (40 credits)

   This elementary unit provides a first course in algebra, elementary calculus, vectors and matrices. Alternatively, you could choose MATH10500, Maths 1ES, which teaches statistics instead of vectors and matrices.There are regular tutorials, computational practicals and assignments.

6. Open Unit

   You will also study 20 credits of open units from the Faculty of Science or Engineering unit catalogue according to your interests and future plans. eg PSYC11019 Developmental Psycholgy or EMAT10714 Discrete Mathematics for Computer Science.

For this course students take four compulsory subjects:

1. English as a Foreign Language 1F (20 credits)

   This unit concentrates on developing competence in English, building on the skills already acquired. It will enable students to use the English language more accurately and with greater in a range of topic areas.

2. English for Academic Study 1F (20 credits)

   Students work intensively on the development of higher level study skills in English, including text analysis, listening to lectures and participation in discussions. This unit is particularly helpful in preparing students for the IELTS examination.

3. English for Specific Purposes 1F (20 credits)

   This unit extends and develops aspects of language covered in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) modules within a subject specific framework. It aims to provide a clear understanding of what is expected in terms of critical analysis of ideas as well as providing a subject-specific context for academic essays and seminars. Practice will also be given in written assignments and oral presentations.

4. English for Specific Purposes 2F (20 credits)

   This unit introduces students to the content, key concepts, language and discourse of their subject areas. It is taught by subject specialists to A-level standard. One area of study is chosen from areas such as:

   • English for Arts and Humanities
   • English for Business and Economics
   • English for Social Sciences
   • English for Science and Engineering
   • English for Teaching Foreign Languages

Students also take another 40 credits from a range of subjects offered by departments within University of Bristol Faculty of Arts. Subject areas offered include some of the following:

• English Language through Literature
• Poetry and Portraits
• Language and Communication Studies.

You will study three units in Academic English in the Centre for English Language and Foundation Studies. You will also attend physics lectures, labs and tutorials, and maths lectures and tutorials in the Faculty of Science alongside British undergraduate students. Students who have successfully completed this programme have gone on to study civil, mechanical and electrical engineering as well as computer science and physics at Bristol.

4. PHYS10300 Physics 1E (40 credits)

   This unit is designed for students with knowledge of science and mathematics equivalent to good GCSE level. No calculus is assumed. Lectures cover mechanics and general physics, optics, electricity and magnetism, and atomic physics. Broadly, the unit covers similar material to Physics A2 (A-level studies) and to a similar standard.

5. MATH10520 Maths 1FM (20 credits)

   Maths 1FM is taken in Term 2. It introduces integration, simple differential equations, simple calculus of more than one variable, matrices and vectors. If your results on a diagnostic maths test show that you need more maths, you will take an additional 20-credit unit, Maths 1EM, in Term 1. Maths 1EM develops algebra, elementary calculus and matrices.

You will study three units in Academic English in the Centre for English Language and Foundation Studies. You will also attend lectures, seminars, practicals and tutorials in the School of Chemistry alongside British undergraduates. Students who have successfully completed this programme have gone on to study chemistry, biochemistry, environmental geosciences, pharmacology and medical biosciences at Bristol.

It explores a range of academic functions, features of style and organisation, and academic grammar and vocabulary in order to improve your overall academic literacy.

3. LANG00008 Academic Speaking (10 credits)

   This unit aims to introduce and practise the skills and language required for effective participation in academic seminars, tutorials and presentations. It explores the features of interactional and transactional language within a range of university scenarios and topics.

4. CHEM10200 Chemistry 1E (40 credits)

   This unit aims to bring students to a standard broadly equivalent to A-level Chemistry. It defines the tools of the subject, chemical constitution and stoichiometry. The electronic structure of atoms and bonding in molecules are introduced and used in discussing molecular shape and in outlining the properties of key elements and inorganic compounds. The concepts of energy, equilibria and chemical kinetics are explored. The importance of acid/base solution equilibria and of oxidation/reduction processes in determining the properties of aqueous solutions is discussed. Structural Organic Chemistry is introduced through a study of hydrocarbons. Simple functional groups and mechanisms of organic reactions are discussed, and features of biologically important molecules are outlined. The unit includes practical sessions and tutorials.

5. CHEM10500 Chemistry 1SM (20 credits)

   The course covers those basic principles of Mathematics that are necessary for a study of Chemistry and illustrates these using Chemical applications. Topics covered include basic equations and rearrangement, indices, logarithms, exponentials, trigonometry, quadratic and simultaneous equations and an introduction to series, complex numbers, vectors, matrices and calculus. The emphasis is on using mathematics in chemical situations rather than on formal proofs. Applications include problems related to chemical kinetics, spectroscopy, chemical equilibria, combinational chemistry, crystallography, thermodynamics, pH and quantum ideas.

For this course students take three main subjects, plus two subject-specific units:

1. English as a Foreign Language 1F (20 credits)

4. Foundations of Finance and Management (20-credit unit)

   This unit aims to prepare overseas students (who are simultaneously improving their English language skills) to read for a degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related disciplines. Students will be familiar with the language and conceptual frameworks of Accounting and Economics. Subjects covered will include: Financial Decision-making; Accounting; Microeconomics and Markets; Macroeconomics.

5. Mathematics 1EM/1ES (40 credits)

   1EM: This unit develops algebra, elementary calculus and matrices to the level normally needed for entry onto undergraduate courses in sciences, engineering, economics and business-related subjects.

   1ES: This unit provides a first course in calculus, algebra and statistics. It is designed to be suitable for first year science students with only GCSE mathematics but is available to other students with an appropriate background. This differs from MATH10600, Mathematics 1EM by teaching statistics instead of vectors and matrices. There are regular tutorials, computational practicals and assignments.
