John Palmer: Eastern Orthodox Faith Contact
John Palmer is the priest at the Russian Orthodox Parish in Bristol. His earliest encounters with Orthodoxy began when he met refugees from wars, revolutions and concentration camps. They had lost everything that our society decreed as integral to 'success' but manifested a gift for life that Fr John had not encountered elsewhere. They had a freedom that released them from the necessity of filling any void with the usual range of psychological manifestations which our society safely labels as 'religion'. Fr John found in Orthodoxy the continuity of an unbroken tradition of worship that has remained faithful to the original Apostolic Tradition and which its members guard and protect in the face of demands for change in each passing age. Above all he encountered the contemporary witness to the Gospel in the lives of the Saints and Martyrs for whom the experience of Divine Glory is not relegated solely to a post-mortem experience.
