Here at the Multifaith Chaplaincy we are seeking to reduce our collective environmental impact as part of our commitment to sustainable living. We are actively participating in the University's Green Impact Award scheme - achieving Bronze in 2009, Bronze Plus in 2010, and Silver in 2011.
Our commitment to 'greening' the Multifaith Chaplaincy is ongoing, and we are continuing to assess areas for improvement and to work out priorities for action.
Since 2009 we have undertaken a wide range of initiatives (such as purchasing recycled paper for our copier and buying organic bottled milk). Existing activities have been given a higher profile (such as encouraging use of our compost bin and recycling facilities).
All members of the Multifaith Chaplaincy Team and all who use the Multifaith Chaplaincy building have an important part to play in ensuring the continued success of these activities. Here are some suggestions as to how you can help:-
Plenty of opportunities throughout the Centre with blue bins for paper in most rooms, a battery bin in the Main Office, and bins for plastic / glass / cans in the kitchen. Also a collection point for cardboard in the kitchen. Read more about the University's recycling commitment here.
The kitchen has two food waste containers - these are emptied by our cleaner and the contents taken to University external food waste bins for onward composting. We also have our *own* composting bins outside - in previous years these have supplied compost for growing herbs - and we used the herbs at Soup Lunch!
WEEE (for example: IT equipment, kettles, mobile phones) shouldn't be disposed of in the usual landfill bins in the Chaplaincy. Instead please refer to the University Guidelines or contact Tom Penn for guidance.
You could consider:
The University Staff Shuttle bus (Temple Meads Station / Cabot Circus to the Precinct), the University Bus Service (Stoke Bishop to the Precinct) or the First Bus city-wide routes.
Cycling - we have stands outside the Centre where you can lock your bike and for our nearest showers / changing facilities, see here. Free cycle training is offered to all University staff.
Walking - there's a University walk-budi scheme.
If driving is the only option, then you might want to look at: Car Sharing - Joining a Car Club - Eco-driving
For advice on planning your journey, see here.
Purifying, distributing and processing water uses energy - our aim is to ensure that all taps are turned off when not in use (it doesn't always happen) and all dripping tips are reported to Estates. Let us know if you've further suggestions!
Why not suggest some new ideas for the future?
