Sector information

Most Veterinary Science graduates are employed in general practice. Veterinary science graduates are also employed in natural science laboratories, veterinary and medical schools, medical research institutes and those institutes that deal expressly with animal health and disease. Some go into research at either universities or research institutes, or go into industry, animal charities (e.g. RSPCA) or Government bodies such as DEFRA.

Employers and occupations

75 graduates, who reported as their main activity that they were in paid work for an employer 15 months after graduation, were employed as Veterinary Practitioners in a range of veterinary surgeries, hospitals and practices. These included services specialising in equine, small animal, farm animal and mixed practice.

Graduates entering non-Veterinary Practitioner roles entered business consultancy and medical internships.

Further study

Graduates increasingly tend to specialise in particular areas of farm or companion animal practice, and continue their professional development by studying for postgraduate certificates and diplomas awarded by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and at European level.
