Student support and funding

The School Biological Sciences aims to provide a supportive environment for all its students. Every student is assigned a tutor, who in turn is assigned a tutorial associate. The associate is normally a postgraduate student and of a similar age to the students themselves. Students are encouraged to discuss any problems, academic or personal, with their tutor or the tutorial associate. In addition, the administrative staff in CD4 and 5 have a great deal of contact with students and hold an 'open office' policy where students are encouraged to seek help, advice and guidance.

Students with disabilities

The School understands that students with disabilities are individuals with a wide and diverse range of needs. As a result we have chosen not to develop a blanket policy on disabilities but seek instead to provide a flexible range of resources and services that best meet the needs of each individual disabled student: needs will be assessed through discussion with the student, the School Disability Advisor and the University Access Unit.

Where a student has disclosed a disability on their UCAS form, they will be contacted and invited for an interview. This will give both the applicant, Access Unit and the School the opportunity to assess needs and requirements and allow them to undertake an audit of the available facilities. Applicants who choose not to disclose a disability on their UCAS form are strongly encouraged to make a disclosure as soon as possible, and before registration, to allow enough time to arrange the necessary support and funding. For full academic support most disabilities, including dyslexia, require funding. This funding is only available from a student's Local Authority (LEA) and should be applied for well in advance of registration. The LEA may also require that a student be formally assessed by an independent authority. Please bear in mind that it may take months to obtain an appointment and the necessary funding.
