Mucosal Immunology Laboratories

Our vision

Our vision is to improve our understanding of the immunology of infectious diseases, to inform the design and use of vaccines. We focus on the mucosal immunology of respiratory infections, particularly those of global relevance and those affecting children. Under the stewardship of Professor Adam Finn, we employ a variety of traditional and cutting-edge methodologies to study respiratory mucosal immunity predominantly in primary human samples.

Central Hypothesis

We believe that mucosal vaccines (such as nasal/throat sprays) are capable of inducinghighly protective immune responses at clinically relevant anatomical sites, thereby not only of preventing severe disease caused by the pathogen, but also interrupting the chain of transmission by blocking onward spread of the pathogen.

Current Themes

Currently we are mainly studying the mucosal immunology of two pathogens:

  • Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus)

  • SARS-CoV-2
