Course summary

Criminology is a multidisciplinary field that explores crime, justice and social harm through perspectives which include sociology, law, psychology, history, philosophy and public policy. Our four-year BSc Criminology with Study Abroad degree gives you the opportunity to examine these issues within a wider policy context while experiencing criminology from an international viewpoint.

The programme develops your understanding of crime, criminal justice and related social harms, alongside the role of public policy in creating safer, fairer and harm-free societies. You will study with leading experts to develop the analytical, research and communication skills valued across justice, policy and social sectors.

A distinctive feature of this course is the chance to spend your third year studying at one of our partner universities overseas. Our partners span regions such as Europe, Asia, North America and Australia, offering a rich variety of academic approaches and cultural environments. You will explore criminological and social science debates in a different cultural and academic setting, broaden your global perspective and build valuable international experience.

Course structure

Your first year provides a strong foundation in criminology, introducing key concepts, theories and debates about how crime, harm and deviance are defined, represented and addressed in contemporary society. You will also begin developing core analytical and research skills that prepare you for more specialised study.

In your second year, you will have the flexibility to explore your interests through a range of optional units that examine contemporary, real-world issues related to crime and social harm. You may also choose a work and work placement option, giving you the opportunity to build practical experience and employment-related skills within an organisation relevant to your studies.

Your third year is spent overseas at one of our partner universities. Studying criminology and social science in a different academic and cultural context allows you to broaden your global perspective, experience new approaches to the discipline and develop valuable international skills.

In your final year, you will return to Bristol to complete your dissertation, investigating a topic of your choice through independent research under the guidance of academic staff. This project brings together your learning across the degree and strengthens key skills in analysis, leadership, project management and communication.
