Kirsty's Experience
"Hello, my name is Kirsty, and I’m a final-year Physics student. I joined the Race Inclusion Advocates (RIA) in my first year, a group of students from diverse backgrounds who work across the University to make the experience better for students of colour. Joining RIA is a great opportunity to have a direct impact on your university experience and meet like-minded people.
I personally joined because I felt like I was going through something that nobody around me could relate to - studying a historically underrepresented course and living in un-diverse accommodation. From the very first day, I shared and heard many stories and realised that my experience reflected a wider issue that needed addressing.
At the end of my second year, we hosted “Dear University”, a space to discuss with staff topics that disproportionately affect students of colour. I had the opportunity to facilitate conversations with academics and staff on issues like the awarding gap and student–tutor communication, which was eye-opening and highlighted where guidance is needed. This experience showed me how important it is to hear senior perspectives and identify areas for improvement.
One piece of advice I would give when choosing a university is to look at what initiatives and schemes exist to support students who look like you. The RIA and similar schemes at Bristol are excellent examples of what universities can do to support inclusion and representation."
