International students: opening a bank account in the UK

If you are an international student, find out how to open a UK bank account.

Find student bank account

These organisations can help you find and compare bank accounts:

As a University, we aren’t allowed to recommend a specific bank to you.

Choose a student bank account

You should choose a bank account that supports your long-term needs.

Consider these factors when choosing a student bank account:

  • look beyond short-term incentives and perks
  • consider how the account will support you throughout your studies
  • check the overdraft terms carefully, as it can help you in an emergency
  • check the app and online banking features, as they can help with budgeting

Bank account overdrafts

When you review the overdraft, you should look at:

  • if the overdraft is interest-free, so you do not get charged when you spend
  • if you can use the overdraft at any time
  • the overdraft’s limit.

An overdraft can be helpful if your living costs are higher than your student loans. You should:

  • never spend more than the overdraft’s limit
  • plan how you will pay off any overdraft you use
  • find out when your bank account will change to a Graduate Bank Account, as you might start paying interest on the overdraft.

Bank account terms and conditions

Each bank has different rules. Most student bank accounts are for full-time students who have been a UK resident for at least three years.

Read the terms and conditions before you sign up for an account. You must follow the rules or you might:

  • be charged
  • have your account frozen
  • get a lower credit rating.
  • Online banking

Get a bank account with an online banking service or mobile app. This makes it easier to manage your money and budget
