Centre for Creative and Critical Media

This Centre will provide a community for researchers across the School of Modern Languages working on media cultures, understood broadly as being inclusive of analogue and digital media, ranging from print and poetry; film and television; auditory cultures and street art; to video games and digital art.

This includes researchers engaging theoretically with media; analysing media cultures in historical and political contexts; developing creative media as research outputs; facilitating the production of creative media as a methodology for research and pedagogy; or collaborating with the creative industries on impact and engagement activities. A particular focus of the Centre will be to provide space to develop the role of creativity within research practices by enabling an exchange of experiences, ideas and networks.

The Centre will be a platform for researchers in the School of Modern Languages to connect with colleagues working creatively and critically on media across the University by collaborating on research and networking events with other research centres such as the Bristol Digital Futures Institute, the Brigstow Institute, the Jean Golding Institute, the Bristol Poetry Institute, Bristol Common Press, Migration Mobilities Bristol and the Centre for Black Humanities. We will also provide opportunities for SML researchers to exchange ideas with local civic partner organisations, such as the Watershed’s Pervasive Media Studio, the Knowle West Media Centre and the Diverse Artists Network, as well as internationally through the research partnerships of Centre members.

The School’s Postgraduate Research community will be at the heart of the Centre, giving them a presence in the steering committee and supporting the organisation of PGR-led seminars and reading groups. The Centre will also offer a structure of informal mentoring and advice for colleagues preparing research outputs, writing grant applications or planning the early stages of research collaborations
