We’re excited to announce three community drop-in events this month in Bristol, Weston-super-Mare and Kingswood. The events, organised by researchers from the Centre for Academic Primary Care (CAPC) in partnership with Caafi Health, aim to strengthen relationships between researchers and local communities to improve health.
Each event offers:
- free basic health checks, including blood pressure, liver scan and advice
- friendly conversations with health researchers and service providers about health topics that matter to you most
- feedback from the Health Ambassadors about what they have learned from previous community events and how they plan to use those insights to make real change.
The events are part of a project with local Health Ambassadors to work with diverse communities and will focus on topics identified as community priorities through their community conversations last year. They are funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) School for Primary Care Research.
Alisha Newman, Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement Coordinator at CAPC, said: “People with the greatest health needs often face the biggest barriers to getting support or joining research that could help them. We are working with communities to break down these barriers and create primary care research and services that truly meet people’s needs.
“Through this project we’re combining our skills in the university and the community with local voices to hold events that will help to make research and services more accessible and relevant. At the same time, we’re exploring new ways of working together to build relationships that last.”
Samina Baig, Health Ambassador, said: “As Health Ambassadors, we are committed to making sure our communities are heard and respected in health care. Community involvement in health research is essential to this.
"Over the past few years, we have continued to build trust and worked hard to improve perceptions of health research within our communities. These events are an important next step, bringing researchers and community members together through trusted relationships.”
