On the Trail of the Lonesome Galaxy
While galaxies generally live in clusters and groups, particularly small groups, some appear relatively ‘isolated’, i.e. lacking in close neighbours. The evolution of galaxies can depend on both internal and external processes which can be difficult to disentangle. Here we use an objective measure of isolation, to explore the most isolated galaxies. We can then determine whether these galaxies, which have had no (recent) interactions, have particular physical characteristics.
