Work-Life Balance

The School of Physics recognises the value of every individual and aims to create a community that respects the diversity of staff and students and enables them to achieve their full potential. As part of our pledge to achieve this, we want to ensure all colleagues have a perfect work-life balance.

Work and Family

The School of Physics promotes the University of Bristol Parents at Work, which provides information and support for parents and carers.

The School is committed to providing every opportunity for our staff to integrate the development of a career with family responsibilities. All employees have the right not to be subjected to a detriment on the grounds of pregnancy, childbirth or maternity/paternity, irrespective of hours of work or service. The University website has more information on eligibility, entitlements and the University paternity policymaternity policyadoption policy and shared parental leave policy.

Flexible Working

A number of our staff currently take advantage of flexible working arrangements. Requests for flexible working are always considered and could include job shares, part time working, compressed hours, term time or seasonal working, career breaks and training breaks. The School recognises flexible working can provide benefits to both the employer and the employee and will also do our best to consider these requests from our staff.

Picture a Physicist Project

Shown to the right of this webpage, we have created a gallary in the rear foyer of HH Wills Physics Laboratory titled "Picture a Physicist". The purpose of this display and project is to showcase Physics staff doing a variety of activities in the lab and in their free time to celebrate the importance of time outside of work. The School is proud of all its staff and is committed to ensure they manage a well-balanced life and career.
