Medical Sciences Study Taster
Are you studying the Sciences and planning on applying to Medical School after graduation? If so, this selection of units may be for you! In the UK, Medicine is taught as an undergraduate degree programme, and so at Bristol, we teach a range of medical sciences units at UG level. Why not use your study abroad experience to get a taste of what it is like to study medicine?
You will find units on:
- pharmacology
- neuroscience and psychological sciences
- anatomy and physiology
- cellular and molecular sciences
This theme is available for General Pathway students.
Choosing your units
Timetabling can be an issue when choosing units from different Schools (PHPH, PANM, ANAT, BIOC, PSYC), and different Year levels. If you are choosing all your units from this guide, we recommend picking at least 2 from the same School and Year level to avoid clashes.
Year 1
Pre-requisites: secondary school Chemistry and another Science (e.g. Biology). For Anatomy units, students will need to show evidence of commitment to studying the topic.
Teaching Block 1
- Anatomical Science 1A - ANAT10008
- Biochemistry Cellular Composition - BIOC10003
- Fundamentals of Molecular Microbiology - PANM10003
- Introduction to Neuroscience - PHPH10012
- Introduction to Social and Developmental Psychology - PSYC10012
- Myths and Misconceptions about Psychology - PSYC10005
- Normal and Tumour Cells - PANM12051
- Pharmacology 1A - PHPH10003
- Physiology 1A - PHPH10017
Teaching Block 2
- Anatomical Science 1B - ANAT10009 – some familiarity with anatomy terminology recommended
- Biochemistry Cellular Processes - BIOC10004
- Disease and Defence - PANM10002
- Functional Neuroanatomy - PHPH10013
- Fundamentals of Body Function - PHPH10014
- Introduction to Cognitive and Biological Psychology - PSYC10013
- Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases - PANM10001
- Pharmacology 1B - PHPH10004 – some familiarity with pharmacology terminology recommended
- Physiology 1B - PHPH10018
- Science of Happiness - UNIV10010 - please note that this class is graded as pass/fail so involves no numerical mark
Year 2
Pre-requisites: some university study in the relevant subject (i.e. pharmacology, neuroscience, cellular sciences, or anatomy)
Teaching Block 1
- Human Anatomy 1 - ANAT20009
- Infection and Immunity - PANM22041
- Neurophysiology - PHPH20009
- Pharmacology of Body Systems - PHPH20012

Teaching Block 1
To reduce the risk of timetable clashes and benefit from studying complementary topics, we recommend the following unit combinations. Please note, where only two units are listed, you will need to choose a third one to make up a full study load:
Combination 1:
- Biochemistry Cellular Composition - BIOC10003
- Normal and Tumour Cells - PANM12051
- And a choice of ONE of the following:
Combination 2:
- Introduction to Neuroscience - PHPH10012
- Physiology 1A - PHPH10017
- And a choice of ONE of the following:
Combination 3:
- Introduction to Social and Developmental Psychology - PSYC10012
- Myths and Misconceptions about Psychology - PSYC10005
