Mission and Research Themes
Transforming the way we create digital technologies for inclusive, prosperous and sustainable societies.
The University of Bristol’s mission is to make a positive impact by addressing society’s greatest challenges through innovative research, education, inclusivity, partnership and civic engagement. The Bristol Digital Futures Institute (BDFI) advances this mission by leading interdisciplinary digital research that addresses major societal challenges while embedding inclusion, responsible innovation and social justice at its core. Working closely with industry, communities and policymakers, BDFI brings people together to explore and shape digital futures, translating cutting-edge research into real-world impact for Bristol, the region and beyond.

Research Areas
Focusing on the digital infrastructures that underpin contemporary society and future innovation. Bringing together research on open connectivity, high powered computing and digital inclusion, alongside the protection and stewardship of critical national and global infrastructures. Looking forward to quantum‑enabled futures, investigating how emerging technologies will reshape connectivity, security and computation, and what this means for society, industry and the public good.
Design and deployment of AI applications, agentic AI, robotics and automation, exploring how intelligent systems operate within complex social and organisational contexts. Emphasising human oversight, responsibility and the boundaries of autonomy, examining how humans and machines can work together safely, effectively and ethically in present and future systems.
Digital health transformation, exploring the use of data, wearables and emerging technologies to improve health, care and wellbeing. Examining mental health impacts, workforce skilling and new models of care, using BDFI’s facilities to support innovation, evaluation and real‑world testing of digital health solutions.
Human–machine teaming, organisational decision‑making, education and the evolving futures of industry and manufacturing. Exploring how digital technologies, automation and new forms of collaboration are reshaping work, skills and institutions, and what this means for productivity, responsibility and equitable transitions.
Looking at the role of digital technologies in the transition to low-carbon and regenerative futures. Developing resilient, resource-efficient systems and practices that enable organisations and communities to move towards a sustainable future beyond fossil fuel dependence. Research spans sustainable energy systems, carbon-aware digital infrastructure, and lifecycle approaches to reducing environmental impacts. Aligning with BDFI’s Sustainable Enterprise Lab.
Exploring games and immersive technologies as tools for change. Bringing together speculative methods, rapid prototyping and audience studies to investigate how digital cultures are created, experienced, and understood. Developing games as a public service, from cultural heritage to mental health, through partnerships and co-creation. Integrating the focus of our first lab, the BDFI Bristol Digital Game Lab.
Cross-cutting themes
BDFI’s research areas are underpinned by a set of cross-cutting themes that shape and inform work across the Institute. These themes ensure that research not only advances technological innovation but also addresses its broader societal implications. By embedding considerations of (1) Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Access, (2) Governance, Policy & Regulation, (3) Privacy, Accountability & Trust, and (4) Ethics & Social Justice throughout our research portfolio, BDFI promotes responsible, inclusive, and impactful approaches to digital innovation and data-driven research.
